Truthfulness to Allah

Salam Alaykum

Allah swt. knows. He knows everything about us. He knows the secrets that we covet, the feelings we hide, He knows us more intimately than anyone else ever will. With all of the sins that we have stacked up, He still lets us walk on this earth, breathe in the air, let it fill our nostrils and enjoy life, in His Mercy. The only thing He asks of us, is that we return to Him, that we are truthful to Him. Realising that He is the only One worthy of our worship, not our sticks that we carry with us.

In a Khutba Ustadh Mohamad Baajour, narrated the story of Musa as. in a way I never thought of before, focusing on his stick. In the Quran Allah swt. tells us that He asked Musa as. what was in his right hand, of course knowing what it is, having created it, the hand holding the stick, Musa as. and everything around him, but He draws attention to it.

Musa as. replies that,  this is my stick, the possessive adjective implying that it is important to him, that he uses it all the time, that he is “dependant” on it. That he leans on it, brings down leaves with it to feed his sheep, and many other things. Still Allah swt. asks him to throw it, to cast it away, the thing that he “depends” on so much and he does so without question, immediately.

He gave something dear to him up for Allah’s swt. sake trusting Him completely, what are we willing to give up for Allah swt.? Did he see the good that came out of throwing the stick immediately? No, it turned into a fast moving snake and Allah swt. asks him to pick it up. But this stick then defeats with Allah swt. permission, the snakes of Pharao’s magicians and brings forth twelve streams for the Sons of Israel.

What is done for Allah swt. will remain forever, everything else perishes, until we are truthful with Allah swt., we are truly lost.

Allah swt. says in the Quran:

Do people think they will be left alone after saying “We believe” without being put to the test? We tested those before them: God will certainly mark out which ones are truthful and which are lying.

[Quran The Spider 29:2-3]

The greatest action we can do is being truthful to Allah swt. and the worst we can do is to lie to Allah swt. to try to deceive the One who knows us better than we know  ourselves.

Allahumma  arina al-haqqa haqqan warzuqna ittiba’ah, wa arina al-batila batilan warzuqna ijtinabah

O Allah! Show us Truth as Truth and give us ability to follow it and show us Falsehood as Falsehood and give us the ability to avoid it.

Being true to yourself or The Moon

Sitting on the cold hard floor, the night welcoming free thought. Gone the bustle of the day, left is a cool breeze flowing lightly across my skin. The moon clearly visible, now leaning over the veranda’s railing, enraptured by its beauty.  A clear night stars illuminating the sky, a few lamps here and there, the streets quiet, my family sleeping.
An Ayah comes to my mind.

And He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.

[Quran The Bee 16:12]

The thing is, we are not taking the time to reason, to think, to let oneself go, free oneself from the worlds distraction. We are lured towards it, fed constant information with no time to process and are expected to have an opinion right now, on everything.

We live in a time of deception, fooling everyone including ourselves of our invincibility our unmeasurable strength and beauty. Like a portrait that is faked and sold at an extortionate price. The price of losing who we are, what we are and why we are. We have fallen to self-deception, one being true to him or herself has become a cop-out to do stupid things, to do whatever we want. Created out of our want to be accepted, to feel valued for being who we are, but being what we aren’t. Two-faced instead of multifaceted.

Looking at the bright moon, I see just one face. One face that takes its time to reveal as I get to know its phases and its full potential. Time that we do not take, to ponder, who we are. What our purpose is, are we just here to eat, poop and die? Being true to oneself is to realise that we are slaves, but to whom is the question. Are we enslaved to the capitalist market the want for more, our inner desires, our fake portraits or do we place our purpose higher?

Truthfulness is the conformity of the outer with the inner, speech with deed, and narrative with reality.

Salam Alaykum,

this month theme is be more truthful, this post is very late more than half way through the month but inshaAllah I’d like to discuss some things about it before the month ends, with Allah’s help.

Truthfulness is the quality of being truthful, which is made up of truth and the suffix -ful. Truth comes from the Old English trēowþ which in turn comes from the Proto Indo-European dru- meaning tree derived from deru meaning solid or firm. Implying truth is something set, solid, unchangeable, withstanding all kinds of weather. 

In Arabic sidq can be used to denote truthfulness, it’s original meaning similar to the Proto Indo-European is one of strength and hardness. The opposite of sidq is kadhib lying or deceit. The word Haqq is also used to mean truth but specifically to an objective truth, such as the Quran and Al-Haqq is one of Allah swt. names the Absolute Truth.

In one of his books Toshihiko Izutsu, a Buddhist translator of the Quran into Japanese refers to Ibn Ishaq as an example of distinguishing between sidq and Haqq.

The Apostle of God informed the people of what they knew was truth (Haqq) and so they recognized at once his truthfulness (sidq).

Sidq is the property of truthfulness of a person and Haqq the objective truth. Furthermore sidq incorporates the intention and the reality of something being true. Therefore one cannot claim, as I understand it, to be siddiq when one thinks that something is wrong, presents it as truth and it also turns out to be truth.

Do not mix truth with falsehood, or hide the truth when you know it.

[Quran Al-Baqarah 2:42]

The inner and the outer have to be the same, that is the speech and belief, as well as the action and intention have to be truthful.

‘Abdullah ra. reported Allah’s Messenger saw. saying:

It is obligatory for you to tell the truth, for truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise, and the man who continues to speak the truth and endeavours to tell the truth is eventually recorded as truthful with Allah, and beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell-Fire, and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with Allah.


Being truthful is our duty in a world full of deceit where no one is sure of whether what we are being told is the truth indeed this is a sign of the End of Days, when “…People will distrust one who is trustworthy, and trust one who is treacherous;…”

Lastly Ibn Al-Qayyim rah. said about truthfulness: 

“Truthfulness is the greatest of stations, from it sprout all the various stations of those traversing the path to Allah; and from it sprouts the upright path which if not trodden, perdition is that persons fate. Through it is the hypocrite distinguished from the believer and the inhabitant of Paradise from the denizen of Hell. It is the sword of Allah in His earth: it is not placed on anything except that it cuts it; it does not face falsehood expect that it hunts it and vanquishes it; whoever fights with it will not be defeated; and whoever speaks it, his word will be made supreme over his opponent. It is the very essence of deeds and the well spring of spiritual states, it allows the person to embark boldly into dangerous situations, and it is the door through which one enters the presence of the One possessing Majesty. It is the foundation of the building of Islam, the central pillar of the edifice of certainty and the next level in ranking after the level of prophethood.”
