Videos? Love em’! XXXV

Peace!

I absolutely missed posting about my favourite videos every week. So I’d like to give it a go again, but this time in a slightly different fashion, which hopefully explains a bit more why these are the videos that I picked out of the slew of other videos I’ve consumed and what they mean to me.

Knowledge is Power.

The first thing, that I identify myself with is my being Muslim. It shapes me, who I am and my actions more than anything else. Being a Muslim however is highly racialized, people assume that only Arabs are and can be Muslims. That a third of all Muslims live in Africa or that the most Muslim populated country is Indonesia is often forgotten. Not only am I a Muslim, but also black. Black in a society, which sees whiteness as normality and blackness as an oddity. Growing up in Germany as a Muslim and a child of parents of Nigerian roots, this video, part of the strolling series, reflects pretty well some of the experiences and frustrations that I have had too.

While I have had brush ins with racist individuals and discrimination before, it is only since coming to University that I really saw and learned of racism as an institution. Decolonise our institutions and our education!

Being a non-Arab Muslim however also brings with it a slight barrier to my interaction with the religion and that is language. While I grew up in a household that valued knowledge and knowledge of Islam, none of us are fluent Arabic speakers and so understanding the sources of our religion came through the use of secondary sources, translations. Translations, which are already infused with the understanding and biases of the person translating the text. An understanding of the Arabic language is therefore something that I am striving for because it is important to know these things.

But what is a Muslim? Is anyone who calls him or herself a “Muslim”, a Muslim or are there certain criteria that you have to meet to be considered a Muslim and who defines those?

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, ”

Islam is that you should testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, that you should perform salah, pay the Zakah, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House, if you are able to do so.”

That and the 6 tenets of faith, are what it means to be a Muslim at the most basic. Yes, there are things that take you out of the religion, but the majority of scholars agree that sins, small or big do not take you outside of the fold of Islam. To rule someone excommunicated is not up to us, but to God alone as set in the Quran and the Sunnah.

I hate when Muslims call themselves or others bad Muslims because they commit sins, we all commit sins and paradise will be full of sinners. Sinners who repented and the door for repentance is open until we breathe our last, so don’t judge people. We are all on a journey to come closer to God, and on that way we will stumble, we will hit roadblocks and delays. That is something I have had to remind myself of constantly with the BBC Documentary: Muslims Like us. Which I have had, as most did, a mixed reaction to. While definitely not among my favourite videos, the documentary gave me a lot to think about. It created conversations within and outside of the Muslim Community in Britain and so find it important enough to include it anyway.

Muslims are tuly diverse there is no question about that, and no video I have recently seen showed that as much and as best as A-Z of Beni. Shot in the style of the A-Z videos on i-D, Beni.space catalogues the diversity of Muslims.

One of my particular interests has been sidelined quite a bit in my life due to various reasons, I do however want to get back into it, so what way better than the way I first got into it. By watching videos of it being practiced.

Well, that was fun!

Knowledge is power and that is what makes us comfortable with how and where we are and to constantly strive for excellence, the ideal of a Muslim is in the Prophet (saw.) we constantly strive to be like him.

Hope you liked this format of my listing my favourite videos in recent months.

Salam Alaykum,

another week has passed alhamdulillah. So here are my favourite Videos this Week, as usual in the Categories. Islam, in under and over 10 minutes. Parkour, Youtube, Shortfilms, Motion Graphics and finally Vimeo. This Weekend was the ICNA Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, America. They streamed the main hall events online, it was amazing mashaAllah. May Allah grant Jannat ul Firdaws to those organising it and helping out and Jazakallahu khairan for streaming it. Okay let’s get into the videos!

Islam

Under 10 minutes

This Video is a hard hitting reminder of how we should rely on Allah swt. the blessings that we have and how we use them. Stories like this are also recounted in the Over 10 minutes part of this category. Definitely worth a watch, a reminder in less than 10 minutes.

Over 10 minutes

Are we rebels without purpose? What is our purpose? As Muslims we believe we were created with a purpose. To worship Allah, Ibadah takes effort on our part. At the same time we are obliged to serve humanity. In all of this we should set our goals high especially with Ramadan this Summer. This Khutba, this friday sermon is an important reminder of setting higher ambitions for ourselves.

A reminder for us that we are going to meet Allah swt., what are we going to say to Him? Do we have brought with us enough provisions? Do we realise that we long for Him? Then what have we done to deserve meeting Him, to deserve seeing Him swt. or do we try to fill this void with our desires of the world, ignoring our longing.

Over 10 minutes

This khutba is a small discussion of a snippet of Ayat 15 of Surah Al-Ahqaf.
“We have commanded man to be good to his parents – his mother struggled to carry him and struggled to give birth to him; his bearing and weaning took a full thirty months – and when he has grown to manhood and reached the age of forty to say, ‘Lord, help me to be truly grateful for Your favours to me and to my parents; help me to do good work that pleases You; make my offspring good. I turn to You; I am one of those who devote themselves to You.’”
[Quran 46:15]

Parkour

A great concept, that has been redone. How would Spider-Man get around if his webs are used up? He of course is an accomplished traceur. Busting his moves in this nice video, with amazing shots.

Youtube

This video truly was my favourite this week. I’m extremely happy for the brother, Mabruk. I’ve only known him through his videos and his blog but his sincerity and love for Islam, the Muslims and what he does shine through. MashaAllah, and I ask Allah swt. that he makes their marriage be one of tranquillity and love. I ask that He swt. makes them find the coolness of their eyes in their partner and keep them on the straight path, Amin.

Shorts

This video beautifully captures the story step-by-step behind the craft of weaving silk and the hard work that these women do a lot of it by hand to make a scarf or pillow case.

Motion Graphics

In the style of an old instruction video, this instruction video instructs the attentive student the craft behind the illusion of life. These 12 principles were developed by the ‘old men’ of Walt Disney Studios, amongst them Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, during the 1930s as the creator of this video tells us in its description.

This is the very moving story of a couple who weathered through the aftermath of an accident causing traumatic brain injury, finding strength in their faith. This is the story of Ian and Larissa.

Salam,

well as you can imagine due to my exams I haven’t been able to watch many videos this week. Most I admit I watched over the last 2 hour while doing some last minute cramming for my next exam tomorrow. Should be alright inshaAllah, make dua’ for me! So here are just a few in a couple of categories.

OFFLINE

Offline is a short disaster comedy film that takes the very real threat of losing your internet connection and treats it like it’s the actual end of the world.

Shortfilms

As I’m getting a camera soon, I’ve been somewhat obsessed with videos about cameras and being interested in what cameras and lenses people used for their videos, more so than before. This video is shot with a canon 550D and a Sigma 18-200 II and a Helios 44m 58mm f2. I’m going to have the 600D inshaAllah, and I already have the  Helios lens from a SLR camera that I got very cheap, what’s missing is an adapter so I can use it on the DSLR.

Motion Graphics

Parkour

Of course I’m going to be partial to this new video, from the group I train with (but haven’t properly, for almost half a year now :/ )

Videos? Love em’ VII

Salam,

this week one video has been particularly controversial, sparking both negative criticism and praise primarily amongst the youth in the Muslim Community in the West (America). I’m of course talking about the Somewhere in America Video by Sheikh Bake, that’s been making it’s rounds on various social media networks.

I’m not going to give you my opinion on it, or go into the nitty gritty of it. I commend the conversation it sparked (a conversation I think should largely be held by the sisters ) and to echo the words of a few brothers, we as Males need to keep our eyes lowered as the Quran commanded it from us.

May Allah swt. Guide us all to the straight path. Amin.

Let’s carry on!

Islam

I watched the full lecture a few months by, think it was during Ramadhan, but very relevant. The bed rock of our society is the family unit, its breaking is one of the major reasons for the collapse of our Communities.

Youtube

I’m a huge fan of Aamer Rahman since discovering him about 2 years ago. I was rather upset when his show was cancelled in Bradford last year.

A very interesting experiment!

Short-Films

Throughout the whole short, I couldn’t stop the video, I was totally unsure whether I should take this serious as proper workmanship or not. People do strange things for a living and I know there will be some people who would pay for it.

Don’t forget our Muslim brethren in Myanmar, may Allah swt. help them.

That’s it for this week folks.
